What is the Visionary Archetype?

The visionary archetype is one of a creative individual who thinks differently from most of society.

Known for their powers of imagination and forward-thinking, they are able to examine problems and come up with innovative solutions, to see the world in a radically different way to others and set out the road map to get there.

The visionary is an innate optimist – they believe that the seemingly impossible can be achieved and set about doing it despite all naysayers.

They are forward thinking, able to see the potential in the world and those around them. They enjoy the opportunity to create spaces where they and others can be creative and indulge in their natural curiosity about the world and its workings.

  • The archetypal visionary can be a very assertive individual.
  • The visionary is energetic, vibrant and a people person.
  • They are able to inspire belief and confidence in others, where they lead others follow.
  • When they believe they are right about a concept or idea they will not shy away from expressing it, and they have strongly held opinions.
  • The visionary is often a natural entertainer, able to hold the attention of an audience through the power of their ideas and words, and they enjoy the opportunity for artistic expression which performing in this manner brings them.
  • Their confidence and boldness allow them to command attention, and they equally enjoy the attention which their gifts bring them.
  • The visionary also has a gift for enabling others to the possibilities available to them in their own lives, and for society more broadly.
  • They can help people explore what will happen in the future if they make certain choices and how they may be able to make a positive impact on society.
  • This capacity comes from their forward-thinking and ability to anticipate the impact of future actions with greater clarity than others.

Visionary Archetype Examples

Examples in past culture include the Hebrew Prophets and the Prophet Muhammad, all of whom were able to envision the future and call to people’s attention the message of God as well as their own failings.

In modern culture entrepreneurs such as Steve Jobs, founder of Apple and inventor of a range of modern technologies, are often seen as society’s visionaries.

In addition, leaders such as Bobby Kennedy, people who work towards their vision of a better, more equal future for society, are seen in a similar vein.
